This course offers instruction to students modeling the human form. Working from the model, students will sculpt a 24" to 36" standing or seated figure or a portrait head (life-size or smaller). With the help of demonstrations by the instructor, illustrations from classic texts and frequent reference to casts concerning the underlying bone and musculature, students will learn about anatomy, proportions, planar relationships and the flow of volume in three dimensions. A variety of modeling tools and brushes will be described, as well as the uses of water-based vs. oil-based clays and methods for achieving desired surface textures. Visual references to the work of past and contemporary figurative sculptors will be provided and interpreted by the instructor at intervals throughout the course. Instruction will be individualized.
