CONTINUING EDUCATION - Fall, 2007
Atelier of the New York Academy of Art
September
10 - December 9, 2007 The study
of the human body and its conceptual and metaphorical aspects are central to
the mission of the New York Academy of Art. Historically, artists devoted years
of training to master the nuances and complexities of the body's representation
in art. Today, the Academy advances this tradition as the basis for the
development of vital contemporary art. The "Atelier" of the Academy is a
Continuing Education program that offers the serious student and passionate
beginner an opportunity to study with accomplished artists who are experts in
drawing, anatomy, painting and sculpture. Learning to make art in the studio of
a master artist had been the time-honored manner through which knowledge and
skills were passed from generation to generation. The Academy reinvigorates
this tradition with specialized courses and intensive instruction. Here,
developing artists acquire the tools necessary to invest their work with sound
draftsmanship, convincing technique and visual authority.
The New York Academy of Art was founded in
1982 by artists, scholars and patrons of the arts, including Andy Warhol, who
were interested in fostering the resurgence of figurative and representational
art. The Academy's first home was the rectory of the Middle Collegiate Church
at Sixth Street and Second Avenue. The Academy then expanded into four floors
next to the Pubic Theater on Lafayette Street where it remained for ten years
before the purchase in 1993 of the current facility at 111 Franklin Street, a
five-story, forty thousand square-foot building in the heart of TriBeCa. In
January 2002 His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales conferred his patronage on
the New York Academy of Art. This Royal Patronage is the first of its kind
bestowed on a visual arts institution in the United
States. |

Cast
Drawing (introductory - advanced)
Robert Zeller Sept. 10
- Nov. 26 Mondays 6:30 - 9:30pm $400 (3hrs a week) (3 CEUs) NEW CLASS This class is not about
"drawing statues." Cast drawing, when practiced academically, provides a means
to improve radically one's drawing ability within a short period of time.
Historically, great figurative draftsmen have utilized methods that combine
both perceptual and conceptual approaches. The goals of this class are to
develop a quick and fluid accuracy utilizing perceptual ability, and cultivate
a conceptual sense of surface form.
Mr. Zeller will demonstrate
concepts for the group as well as provide individual instruction. Students will
work from a variety of casts for four weeks, focusing on the accuracy of
shapes. This will be followed by four weeks of conceptual "turning of form,"
and four weeks of creating a "finished" drawing, utilizing the skills presented
throughout the course.
Optional homework assignments will supplement
the in-class exercises and explore a variety of drawing media. [click here for materials list]

Academic Figure
and Portrait Painting (introductory - advanced)
Robert Armetta
Mondays and/or Wednesdays - Sept. 10 - Nov. 26 6:30 - 9:30pm
$480.00 (3hrs a week) (3 CEUs) $900.00 (6hrs a week) (6
CEUs) (includes model fee)
This class focuses on practical academic
portrait- and figure-painting methods. Students are presented with a clear and
organized system for mixing and applying accurate flesh tones by using a
traditional structured palette. Simple methods for ascertaining proper
proportions, drawing and shading will be thoroughly discussed. The class is
designed to eliminate the guesswork and trial-and-error approach to painting,
and it is suited to beginning, intermediate and advanced painters.

Figure Drawing 101
(introductory) Hal Brooks Tuesdays -
Sept. 11 - Nov. 27 Tuedays 6:30 - 9:30pm $480 (3hrs a week) (3
CEUs) (includes model fee)
This class is designed as an introduction
to life drawing for the beginning art student. We will incorporate a variety of
short gesture (action) poses and work towards longer sustained poses by the end
of the semester. Working from the live model, students will develop an
understanding of figure structure, proper proportion and the anatomical aspects
of the human figure.
Basic principles of drawing will be discussed,
from the proper observation of the model, to the use of light and shadow to
express the volumetric forms of the figure. The use of line and rhythm will
also be explored as a means of representing the expressive qualities of the
human form.

Direct and Indirect Painting
(introductory - advanced)
John Wellington
Wednesdays - Sept. 12 - Nov. 28 6:30 - 9:30pm $480.00 (3hrs per
week) (3 CEUs) (includes model fee)
This class is designed to remove
much of the mystery of the older and admired techniques of the Masters.
Painting from the nude, students will learn both the faster techniques of
painting in alla prima and dead color palates, and the slower more refined
skills of starting with a grisille (monochromatic under-painting), then
building up the surface with semi-opaque layers of color and transparent
glazes. Weekly demonstrations by John Wellington will include advanced
blending techniques, applications of warm and cool layers of color to give
depth to flesh, and how to balance both perceptive and conceptive skills when
painting from life. Emphasis will also be placed on developing strong drawing
and compositional skills. There will also be a thorough review of
brushes, paints, media, linens, wood, and copper prepared panels.

Copying the
Masters at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (intermediate to advanced)
Michael Smith
Thursdays - Sept. 13 - Dec. 6 12:30 - 4:30pm $300.00 (3hrs per week)
(3 CEUs) NEW CLASS
Copying works from
the masters is a rare opportunity that can greatly affect the knowledge of the
individual artist. Close examination of such master works results in the better
understanding of the decision-making processes and many techniques of the
master artist. This class is designed to offer the student the chance for
intensive study of master paintings with palette in hand. Drawing, design, and
color relationships will be emphasized. The class will copy works of interest
selected by the individuals of the class. There will be short weekly lectures
and demos on varying topics related to the master works as well as handouts
pertaining to the individual artists chosen. The class is subject to the rules
and regulations for copying that the Metropolitan has in place and students
will be required to renew the permit to copy every four weeks. This class is
for those with intermediate or advanced skill levels. Students may paint or
draw.

Light Effect Figure
Painting (introductory - advanced)
Dan Thompson Sept.
19 - Dec. 5 6:30 - 9:30 $510.00 (3 CEUs)
* Class starts
Sept. 19
This course offers
students the opportunity to study the effects of light on form by grasping the
light condition, rather than reducing color to a subordinate of value. This
principle will be approached, initially, by illuminating the figure with
colored gels, and working up a series of well drawn color starts.
Once
competence in the beginning of this approach is achieved, one or more poses
will be extended to include multiple session. Expect to use a broad palette,
and to work, at least partially, with palette knives.

designed for beginning students wishing to learn the basic techniques of
watercolor painting. A series of demonstrations will be conducted introducing

paintings utilizing the demonstrated techniques. One-on-one instruction will be
provided in each class.
Additionally, Ms. Fukushima will bring in
samples of her work and discuss the process she employs when creating her
award-winning art including choosing subject matter, composition, initial

Human Anatomy /
Ecorche of the Head - This is an 8-week Course (intermediate to
advanced) David Klass
Thursdays - Sept. 20 - Nov. 15 6:30 - 9:30pm $345 (3hrs per week)
(3 CEUs) (includes material fee) * No Class Oct. 4
This
course offers in-depth analysis of the anatomy of the human head through the
construction of an écorché (anatomical model). Each student will
construct a skull from plasteline (oil based clay), on a specially designed
armature, over which they sculpt the muscles one by one, which effect the
surface form. This three- dimensional approach to the head is the most
successful method for understanding the complex relationships among the
underlying forms. For anyone interested in sculpting the human figure,
constructing an écorché provides an invaluable experience that
will enhance modeling skills. Open to students at all levels.
