Figure Drawing 101
(introductory) Hal Brooks Tuesdays - Jan
15 - Apr 8 6:30 - 9:30pm $500 (3hrs per week) (3 CEUs) $500 = $450
(tuition) + $50 (model fee)
This class is designed as an introduction
to life drawing for the beginning art student. We will incorporate a variety of
short gesture (action) poses and work towards longer sustained poses by the end
of the semester. Working from the live model, students will develop an
understanding of figure structure, proper proportion and the anatomical aspects
of the human figure.
Basic principles of drawing will be discussed,
from the proper observation of the model, to the use of light and shadow to
express the volumetric forms of the figure. The use of line and rhythm will
also be explored as a means of representing the expressive qualities of the
human form.

Direct and Indirect Painting
(introductory - advanced)
John Wellington
Wednesdays - Jan 16 - Apr 9 6:30 - 9:30pm $500 (3hrs per week) (3
CEUs) $500 = $450 (tuition) + $50 (model fee)
This class is designed
to remove much of the mystery of the older and admired techniques of the
Masters. Painting from the nude, students will learn both the faster techniques
of painting in alla prima and dead color palates, and the slower more refined
skills of starting with a grisille (monochromatic under-painting), then
building up the surface with semi-opaque layers of color and transparent
glazes. Weekly demonstrations by John Wellington will include advanced
blending techniques, applications of warm and cool layers of color to give
depth to flesh, and how to balance both perceptive and conceptive skills when
painting from life. Emphasis will also be placed on developing strong drawing
and compositional skills. There will also be a thorough review of
brushes, paints, media, linens, wood, and copper prepared panels.

Sculpting the
Figure (introductory - advanced)
Cynthia Eardley
Wednesdays - Jan 30 - Apr 23 - 6:30 - 930pm - Section A
Saturdays -
Feb 9 - Apr 26 - 10:00am - 1:00pm - Section B
$565 (3hrs per week) (3

This course offers instruction to students modeling the human form.
Working from the model, students will sculpt a 24" to 36" standing or seated
figure or a portrait head (life-size or smaller). With the help of
demonstrations by the instructor, illustrations from classic texts and frequent
reference to casts concerning the underlying bone and musculature, students
will learn about anatomy, proportions, planar relationships and the flow of
volume in three dimensions. A variety of modeling tools and brushes will be
described, as well as the uses of water-based vs. oil-based clays and methods
for achieving desired surface textures. Visual references to the work of past
and contemporary figurative sculptors will be provided and interpreted by the

Painting and Drawing the Figure from
Life (introductory - advanced)
Dan Thompson $530 (3hrs
per week) (3 CEUs) $515 = $450 (tuition) + $50 (model fee) + $15 (material
fee)
Class Postponed Until Summer, 2008 - Please
call for waiting list
Organized into long and short pose sessions, this
course will afford students the opportunity to work on a variety of technical
issues. Students will begin by learning how to consistently recreate gestural
vitality. Participants will then advance toward acquiring the ability to
establish an effective proportional harmony for each drawing or painting. These
short pose principles will support an exploration into seeing flatly and
composing in patterns. In a value scale, the instructor will work individually
with each student to systematically study and assemble tonal relationships.
Paradigms of structure will be addressed primarily in the long pose, through
the lens of form metaphor and the dynamics of light on surface form. Students
who prefer to paint in a grisaille or in a limited palette will be guided in
this effort by the instructor. For certain long poses, colored gels will also
be employed, so that other students can develop their sensitivity to the
principle of light key as a color context for the details of human form. The
longest pose will be six sessions, and will be ideal for both figure and
portrait painting.

The Bargue
Method (introductory - advanced)
Ard Berge Thursdays -
Jan 17 - Apr 10 6:30 - 9:30 $450 (3hrs per week) (3 CEUs) "Drawing on the Past"- an academic approach to drawing.
This course is designed to give students an introduction to classical methods
of drawing through the study of Charles Bargue and Jean-Leon Geromes' "Cours de
Dessin". The elegant lessons in this artists' manual will be used to train the
eye to see accurately and provide a solid foundation for the development of a
highly rendered drawing. Bargue's approach to studying drawing has proven
particularly effective in giving students the skills necessary to develop their
work in a clear, logical, and systematic way. It was eventually adopted by all
major art curriculums throughout Europe at the end of the nineteenth century.
Lectures and demonstrations will also acquaint students with the "sight-size"
technique, which dates to the fifteenth century and is especially useful in
solving problems with proportion and seeing the subject in the abstract.
The class will begin with students working in charcoal, copying
reproductions from Charles Bargue's "Cours De Dessin" lithographs. We will then
move on to developing a highly finished pencil drawing from a plaster cast.
Finally, the class will conclude with the creation of a "trois couleur" chalk
and charcoal drawing on toned paper of a statue from the New York Academy's
impressive cast collection.

Human Anatomy /
Ecorche David
Klass Thursdays - Jan 17 - Apr 24 - (15 week course) 6:30 -9:30
$565 (3hrs per week) (4 CEUs) $565 = $500 (tuition) + $65 (materials
fee)
This course offers in-depth analysis of human anatomy through
the construction of an écorché (anatomical figure). Each student
will construct a skeleton from plasteline (oil based clay), on a specially
designed 24" armature, over which they sculpt the muscles one by one, which
effect the surface form. This three- dimensional approach to the figure is the
most successful method for understanding the complex relationships among the
forms of the body. For anyone interested in sculpting the human figure,
constructing an écorché provides an invaluable experience that
will enhance modeling skills. Open to students at all levels.

Cast
Drawing (introductory - advanced)
Robert Zeller Jan 19 -
Apr 5 Saturdays - 2:00 - 5:00pm $450 (3hrs a week) (3 CEUs) NEW CLASS This class is not about
"drawing statues." Cast drawing, when practiced academically, provides a means
to improve radically one's drawing ability within a short period of time.
Historically, great figurative draftsmen have utilized methods that combine
both perceptual and conceptual approaches. The goals of this class are to
develop a quick and fluid accuracy utilizing perceptual ability, and cultivate
a conceptual sense of surface form.
Mr. Zeller will demonstrate
concepts for the group as well as provide individual instruction. Students will
work from a variety of casts for four weeks, focusing on the accuracy of
shapes. This will be followed by four weeks of conceptual "turning of form,"
and four weeks of creating a "finished" drawing, utilizing the skills presented
throughout the course.
Optional homework assignments will supplement
the in-class exercises and explore a variety of drawing media. [click here for materials list]
