CONTINUING EDUCATION - Summer 2007
Atelier of the New York Academy of Art
June 4 -
August 8, 2007 The study of the
human body and its conceptual and metaphorical aspects are central to the
mission of the New York Academy of Art. Historically, artists devoted years of
training to master the nuances and complexities of the body's representation in
art. Today, the Academy advances this tradition as the basis for the
development of vital contemporary art. The "Atelier" of the Academy is a
Continuing Education program that offers the serious student and passionate
beginner an opportunity to study with accomplished artists who are experts in
drawing, anatomy, painting and sculpture. Learning to make art in the studio of
a master artist had been the time-honored manner through which knowledge and
skills were passed from generation to generation. The Academy reinvigorates
this tradition with specialized courses and intensive instruction. Here,
developing artists acquire the tools necessary to invest their work with sound
draftsmanship, convincing technique and visual authority.
The New York Academy of Art was founded in
1982 by artists, scholars and patrons of the arts, including Andy Warhol, who
were interested in fostering the resurgence of figurative and representational
art. The Academy's first home was the rectory of the Middle Collegiate Church
at Sixth Street and Second Avenue. The Academy then expanded into four floors
next to the Pubic Theater on Lafayette Street where it remained for ten years
before the purchase in 1993 of the current facility at 111 Franklin Street, a
five-story, forty thousand square-foot building in the heart of TriBeCa. In
January 2002 His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales conferred his patronage on
the New York Academy of Art. This Royal Patronage is the first of its kind
bestowed on a visual arts institution in the United
States. |

Figure Drawing 101
(introductory) Hal Brooks June 5th thru
July 31th Tuesdays 6:30 - 9:30 $375.00 (includes model fee)
This class is designed as an introduction to life drawing for the
beginning art student. We will incorporate a variety of short gesture (action)
poses and work towards longer sustained poses by the end of the semester.
Working from the live model, students will develop an understanding of figure
structure, proper proportion and the anatomical aspects of the human figure.
Basic principles of drawing will be discussed, from the proper
observation of the model, to the use of light and shadow to express the
volumetric forms of the figure. The use of line and rhythm will also be
explored as a means of representing the expressive qualities of the human
form.

Human Anatomy /
Ecorche David
Klass June 5th thru July 26th (16 sessions) Tuesdays and Thursdays
6:30 -9:30 Course fee: $575.00 (includes materials fee)
This
course offers in-depth analysis of human anatomy through the construction of an
écorché (anatomical figure). Each student will construct a
skeleton from plasteline (oil based clay), on a specially designed 24"
armature, over which they sculpt the muscles one by one, which effect the
surface form. This three- dimensional approach to the figure is the most
successful method for understanding the complex relationships among the forms
of the body. For anyone interested in sculpting the human figure, constructing
an écorché provides an invaluable experience that will enhance
modeling skills. Open to students at all levels.

The Bargue
Method (introductory - advanced)
Ard Berge June 6th thru
August 8th Wednesdays 6:30 - 9:30 (no class July 4th)
$350.00 "Drawing On The Past"- an academic
approach to drawing. This course is designed to give students an introduction
to some of the most basic tried and true methods of drawing. Emphasis will be
placed on laying the solid groundwork for the development for a highly rendered
drawing through the use of the "Cours de Dessin", developed by Charles Bargue
and Jean-Leon Gerome. This course eventually became adopted by all major art
cirriculums throughout Europe at the end of the nineteenth century and is
particularly effective in giving students the skills and confidence to build up
their drawing in a clear and logical, systematic way. Lectures and
demonstrations will also acquaint students with the time-honored, "sight-size"
technique, which dates back to the fifteenth century and is particularly useful
in solving problems with proportion and seeing the subject in the abstract.
The class begins with students working in pencil from reproductions
of the Charles Bargue, Cours De Dessin lithographs, they will then move on to a
charcoal drawing from a plaster cast. Students will then create a large scale
charcoal drawing of a statue chosen from the New York Academy's cast
collection. Finally the course will conclude with a pencil drawing done from a
live model. [click here for materials list] |
