The library is open to students and faculty of the New York Academy of Art and is located on the first floor of 111 Franklin Street. Students may use library computers for research, word processing and scanning. They may also make color prints and copies for a nominal fee. The Academy library does not lend books or magazines to students although students may borrow videos and DVDs if they choose not to view them in the library.  Students may also check out a portable DVD player, 35mm SLR camera and tripod.  Wi-Fi is available throughout the building.

 

While classes are in session library hours are Monday-Friday 9:00-9:00, Saturday and Sunday 12:00-5:00.

COLLECTION SCOPE

The library collects in the areas of the visual arts and includes titles specifically selected to support the MFA curriculum, with a focus on the work of figurative artists, art history, art criticism, and anatomical studies, as well as the historical periods in which figurative art flourished: ancient Greece and Rome, the Renaissance, Baroque, and Neo-Classical periods. The media of painting, sculpture, and drawing are emphasized, as are works on theory and method.  Psychology, social sciences, sciences and law are represented only in direct relation to the arts. Formats collected include monographs, catalogues raisonnés, exhibition catalogs, slides, videos, DVDs and serials.

 

Currently the collection features:

 

  • Over 7,000 books
  • 12,000 slides
  • Over 250 videotapes and DVDs
  • 60 periodical subscriptions

 

Other library features include:

 

  • Online public access catalog for searching the collections (click here to search the catalog).
  • Faculty and alumni artist files (announcements, clippings, press releases, brochures, reviews, invitations, small exhibition catalogs, and other ephemeral material)
  • Electronic Resources include subscriptions to ARTstor, a digital art image database, and ProQuest Platinum Periodicals.
  • The Academy’s institutional archives (restricted access)
  • Internet access in the library and WiFi throughout the building (ask the librarian for password)
  • New color and black & white copiers and printers and scanners

 

Although the library is non-circulating, students may borrow videos and DVDS, a portable DVD player, camera, and tripod.

 

ARRANGEMENT

Books in the library are shelved according to their subject using Library of Congress call numbers.  Current and back issues of magazines are shelved alphabetically by title.

 

COPYING 

Students may make color or grayscale copies. U.S. copyright law (Title 17, U.S. Code) prohibits the unauthorized reproduction or distribution of copyrighted materials, except as permitted by the principles of fair use.  Students are expected to act responsibly and respectfully when using images or text.

A digital library more than one million images in the areas of art, architecture, the humanities, and social sciences with descriptive information and a set of tools to view, present, and manage images for research and pedagogical purposes.  ArtStor is a non-profit organization created by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Development of the collections is ongoing, the product of a growing number of partnerships with individuals and institutions.

 

The following databases are subsidized by the New York State Library through an LSTA grant from the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services. Part of the New York Online Virtual Electronic Library (NOVELny):

Health & Wellness Resource Center  
 Medical, statistical, health, and wellness information, including reference material as well as full-text magazines, journals, and pamphlets from a wide variety of authoritative sources.

National Newspaper Index
Front-to-back indexing of the Christian Science Monitor, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal. All articles, news reports, editorials, letters to the editor, obituaries, product evaluations, biographical pieces, poetry, recipes, columns, cartoons and illustrations, and reviews are included. The only items not included are weather charts, stock market tables, crossword puzzles, and horoscopes.
Also included are national and international news stories written by the staff writers of the Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times. Other types of articles from these two papers are indexed selectively.


New York State Newspapers
Full text from major New York State newspapers including The New York Times (1995- ), the New York Post (2001- ), and the New York Observer (2001- ). Others included are the Buffalo News (1996- ), Post-Standard (Syracuse, 2001- ), and Press & Sun-Bulletin (Binghamton, 1999- ).


Proquest International Newspapers
Full text from more than 25 international newspapers. Follow this link for a list of included titles.

 

Proquest Newspapers (U.S.)
Full text from the following: Atlanta Journal-Constitution (1990- ), Boston Globe (1980- ), Christian Science Monitor (1988- ), Detroit News (1989- ), Seattle Times (1984- ), and USA Today (1987- ).

 

ProQuest Platinum Periodicals
Periodical database covering a broad range of subject areas. More than 2,000 titles total, more than 800 include full text articles. More than half of included titles are scholarly/peer-reviewed.

2010

The Academy library was awarded another grant of $4,500 for collection development. The New York State Department of Education administers development grants as part of the New York State Library’s Strategic Plan to ensure high quality service and resources to the people of New York State.

 

2009

During June and July the library hours are Tuesdays & Thursdays 9 to 5 (closed for lunch).  If you have an urgent library need on Monday, Wednesday or Friday you can find Kristine in the Archives on the 4th floor.  The library is closed during the month of August.

 

Academy librarian Kristine Paulus taught a free one day bookbinding workshop.  Students learned how to make their own sketchbooks. Click here to see pictures.

 

2008

The library is pleased to announce launch of its new web-based Online Public Access Catalog which allows students to access the library catalog from any Internet connection. To access the OPAC and search the library’s holdings, click here.

The library now subscribes to ARTstor, a digital library of nearly one million images in the areas of art, architecture, the humanities and social sciences with a set of tools to view, present and manage images for research and pedagogical purposes.
