Clifford Owens

Clifford Owens is an interdisciplinary artist and Director of Critical Studies at the New York Academy of Art. A Guggenheim Fellow, he works across performance, photography, drawing, video and text, and his work is held by MoMA and the Whitney.

BIO
Owens received his BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and his MFA from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, followed by postgraduate study at the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.
His solo museum exhibitions include Anthology at MoMA PS1, Better the Rebel You Know at the former Cornerhouse in Manchester, England, and Perspectives 173: Clifford Owens at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. He has appeared in group exhibitions including Freestyle, Greater New York 2005 and Performance Now: The First Decade of the New Century, and at the Walker Art Center, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, The Kitchen and the Museum of Modern Art.
His performance-based projects have been presented at the Museum of Modern Art, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Performa 05 and the Pulitzer Arts Foundation. Owens has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, the William H. Johnson Prize, a Louis Comfort Tiffany Award and support from Art Matters and the New York Foundation for the Arts. His work is held by the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Baltimore Museum of Art.
