Our Mission: The New York Academy of Art is a graduate school that combines intensive technical training in the fine arts with active critical discourse. We believe that rigorously trained artists are best able to realize their artistic vision. Academy students are taught traditional methods and techniques and encouraged to use these skills to make vital contemporary art.

Mission Statement
The New York Academy of Art aspires to be a center of creativity, learning, and expertise in the field of figurative art. Through an enduring commitment to traditional skills and a strong engagement with contemporary discourse, the Academy will empower a new generation of artists.
History
The New York Academy of Art was founded in 1982 by artists, scholars and patrons of the arts, including Andy Warhol, to foster a resurgence in the training of figurative and representational art. The Academy has since developed into a 501 (c)(3) non-profit cultural institution housing the nation’s first graduate school of figurative art, a continuing education program, the region’s most in-depth figurative art library, an extensive exhibition and lecture series, and iconic New York City events such as Take Home a Nude and Tribeca Ball.
Leadership
Paul R. Provost, Ph. D.
President
Paul Provost was appointed President in April 2025, bringing 25 years of leadership across the non-profit and commercial art worlds — including founding CEO of the Art Bridges Foundation and Deputy Chairman at Christie’s. He holds a doctorate in art history from Princeton University.
Peter Drake,
Provost Emeritus
Peter Drake was appointed Provost in January 2018, previously serving as Dean of Academic Affairs since 2010. A practicing artist with work held in the Whitney Museum, MOCA LA, and LACMA, he is a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Award and in Spring 2026 was named Provost Emeritus.

Located in the heart of Tribeca, the Academy hosts over 100 Artist Studios, Classrooms, a Cast Drawing Room, and Wilkinson Hall — a unique 3,240 square-foot event space featuring original decorative Corinthian columns, hardwood floors, dramatic 20-foot ceilings, adjustable gallery lighting, and a built-in sound system. Wilkinson Hall can be used for corporate and non-profit entertaining including lectures, art auctions, client receptions, fundraising dinners, and product launches. Studios are grouped to create an exchange of ideas across disciplines, and faculty conduct regular studio tours for tutorials and formal critiques.

The main floor of 105 Franklin houses the Academy Library, specimen collection, and anatomy collection.
The Academy Library provides written, visual, and electronic resources supporting the intellectual and creative needs of the Academy community. Its specialized collections and services support technical study, critical exploration, and lifelong artistic growth, with holdings focused on the visual arts and the CFA and MFA curricula.
Room 201 is a shared second-floor workspace for oversized works and large-scale projects.
GL3 is a communal sculpture studio on the Garden Level for work in clay, marble, and plaster casting, equipped with HEPA air filtration units and downdraft tables.
The kiln room and woodshop, both located on the Garden Level, are managed by the Studio Manager, who oversees access and reservations.
