MARGARET BOWLAND
Our faculty of professional artists and experienced academics has extensive exhibition, publication, award, and grant history and a variety of professional affiliations. Faculty specialties reflect the major concentrations of the curriculum, assuring that students receive outstanding education in all areas. Faculty and classes offered vary each semester. The high ratio of faculty to students allows for ease of access to instructors for individualized attention. Students receive nearly three times more direct instruction than students at most other art schools.
Department Leadership
PROVOST
Peter Drake is a painter and curator who has served as Provost of the New York Academy of Art since 2018, after eight years as Dean of Academic Affairs. He holds a BFA from Pratt Institute and has taught at Parsons, the School of Visual Arts and the Maryland Institute College of Art, as well as curating for The Drawing Center and writing for Flash Art. He has held twenty-seven solo exhibitions, and his work is in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, MOCA Los Angeles, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Phoenix Art Museum. His permanent MTA commission Waiting For Toydot is installed at Massapequa Station. He has received a National Endowment for the Arts award and a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship.
FACULTY CHAIR, DIRECTOR OF DRAWING & ANATOMY
Michael Grimaldi is a painter and draughtsman who has taught drawing, painting and anatomy for more than twenty years. He studied at the New York Studio School, the National Academy and the Art Students League of New York, and pursued independent studies in anatomy and dissection at the Facultad de Medicina in Buenos Aires and at Drexel University College of Medicine, where he has since taught Advanced Artistic Anatomy. His work has been shown at the Mori Arts Center in Tokyo, the National Academy Museum, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Beijing Art Museum and the de Young Museum. He is a recipient of the Alma Schapiro Prize and an Affiliated Fellowship at the American Academy in Rome, the Edward G. McDowell Travel Grant and two Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grants.
DIRECTOR OF PRINTMAKING
John Jacobsmeyer has contributed to the discourse in conceptual figuration in New York for more than twenty years. He holds a BFA from the University of New Hampshire and an MFA in painting and printmaking from Yale University, and operates JJHS Press, which published his wordless book More Than Human in 2010 and the portfolio Safety First for the Shanghai Metro in 2013. He has taught or lectured at over forty institutions worldwide, including RISD, the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and Pratt Institute. He is a recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship to Italy, a Pollock-Krasner Grant, the Basil Alkazzi Award and a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship. His work is held by the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art and by the cities of Seattle and Shanghai.
DIRECTOR OF SCULPTURE
Nina Levy is a sculptor and photographer whose work enlarges the human figure to unsettling scale. She holds a BA in English and Art from Yale University and an MFA from the University of Chicago. Her solo exhibitions include Souvenirs and New Photographs at Peter Miller Gallery in Chicago, To Scale at the Rotunda Gallery in Brooklyn, Beyond Appearances at the Lehman College Art Gallery in the Bronx, and Chimera at Elena Ab Gallery in New York, and she has also exhibited at LIU Brooklyn. She lives and works in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
DIRECTOR OF CRITICAL STUDIES
Clifford Owens is an interdisciplinary artist working in photography, performance, drawing, video and text. He holds a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, and completed the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program and Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. His solo museum exhibitions include Anthology at MoMA PS1, Better the Rebel You Know at Cornerhouse in Manchester and Perspectives 173 at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, and his performance work has been presented at the Museum of Modern Art, the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. He is a Guggenheim Fellow and a recipient of the William H. Johnson Prize and the Louis Comfort Tiffany Award. His work is held by MoMA, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Studio Museum in Harlem.
DIRECTOR OF PAINTING
Wade Schuman is a painter whose work draws on allegory, natural history and the human figure. He studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, travelling extensively in Europe on a Schiedt Travel Grant, and has taught at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia as well as privately for over fifteen years. He has received three Visual Arts Fellowship Grants from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and an Award of Excellence from the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and was a finalist for a National Endowment for the Arts Mid-Atlantic Regional Fellowship. His work has been written about in The New York Times, the New Yorker and Art in America.
CFA FACULTY CHAIR
Dan Thompson has taught painting and drawing at the New York Academy of Art since 2001 and serves as Faculty Chair of the Certificate of Fine Arts program. His work has been exhibited and collected internationally, including at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Butler Institute of American Art, the Dahesh Museum of Art, the Museo Europeo de Arte Moderno in Barcelona, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Shanghai Art Museum. He has won the Grand Prize of the American Society of Portrait Artists, first prize in figure drawing at the Salmagundi Club and two Bernstein awards from the Corcoran School of Art, and has been designated a Living Master by the Art Renewal Center. He co-founded two art schools in New York City and has taught at the Art Students League of New York and the National Academy of Design.

ADJUNCT FACULTY SCULPTURE
Corinne Beardsley
Corinne Beardsley makes geological sculptures, installations, and performances that reflect on touch, mortality, and sensory embodiment through haptic records of clay. She received a BFA from Hartford Art School and an MFA from the New York Academy of Art, where she is adjunct faculty in sculpture. She directed Mosely Gallery and lectured at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and Salisbury University. Her work has been shown at Field Projects, Sargent Daughters/Shrine, Flowers Gallery, and Site:Brooklyn in New York, the Central Academy of Fine Art Museum in China, M16 Artspace and Sawtooth Gallery in Australia, and Real Art Ways in Hartford. Beardsley has held fellowships and residencies at the Vermont Studio Center, Red Lodge Clay Center, Babayan Culture House, and the University of Tasmania. She lives and works in Brooklyn.

John Belardo
John Belardo is a sculptor whose work ranges from monumental public installations to digital prototyping and large-scale ceramic sculpture. He was educated at the New York Academy of Art and the Newington Cropsey Academy of Art, and apprenticed in the studio of Richard McDermott Miller. He is adjunct faculty in sculpture at the New York Academy of Art, a faculty member at Lehman College CUNY, and a visiting scholar for the Institute for American Universities. His sculptures and drawings have been exhibited at Brookgreen Gardens, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, the Salmagundi Club, and Lodge Gallery, with permanent public sculpture at Georgetown University and in Cooperstown, New York. Belardo won the Gold Medal from the Hudson Valley Art Association and is a Fellow of the National Sculpture Society.

Lisa Blas
Lisa Blas is a New York based artist of Guamanian and Italian-American descent working in painting, photography, and installation. She has taught fine arts at the undergraduate and graduate level in the United States and Europe, with a particular focus on museum collections and historical archives. In 2015 she created Monday’s Image, a weekly RSS feed on her website that pairs a work of art from a museum collection with the front page of the newspaper. Blas teaches Professional Practice and Senior Studio at The College of New Jersey in Ewing Township, and is adjunct faculty in Critical Studies at the New York Academy of Art.

Margaret Bowland
Margaret Bowland is a painter in oils and pastels whose portraits and figurative compositions take up personal and societal issues. A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she has maintained a studio in Brooklyn for more than twenty years and has taught painting at the New York Academy of Art for over ten years as adjunct faculty in drawing and painting. Her work has been exhibited across the United States, including two shows with Peter Tatistcheff Gallery in New York and at Art Fair 21 in Germany, and the Greenville County Museum of Art mounted a major exhibition with catalogue in 2010. In 2009 she won the People’s Choice Award in the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery.

Jon deMartin
Jon deMartin centers his work on the human figure within an environment, applying sixteenth to eighteenth century drawing techniques to contemporary subject matter, and he stresses drawing from both life and the imagination as the goal of composition and picture making. He is adjunct faculty in drawing at the New York Academy of Art and has taught life drawing and painting for more than twenty years at schools including the Art Students League, the Grand Central Academy of Art, the Janus Collaborative School of Art, and Studio Incamminati. His work has been exhibited at the Albright Knox Museum, the Arnot Museum, the Florence Griswold Museum, the Butler Museum of Art, and the Beijing World Art Museum. He is the author of Drawing Atelier: The Figure.

Cynthia Eardley
Cynthia Eardley is a sculptor whose figurative work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions nationwide, including at the Monique Knowlton Gallery, the Museum of South Texas, the Huntsville Museum, the New Museum of Contemporary Art, Sideshow Gallery, Ceres Gallery, and Rhonda Schaller Gallery. She teaches sculpture and anatomy at the New York Academy of Art and has taught at Pratt Institute, the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, and the Newark Museum School. She co-founded and co-directed the architecture and public arts group SITE, Inc., where her trompe l’oeil Peeling Project for Best Products was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art. Her work has been discussed in The New York Times, Sculpture, The Village Voice, The Nation, and ARTnews.

David Ebony
David Ebony is an art critic, editor, and independent curator who teaches a graduate seminar in art and culture at the New York Academy of Art as adjunct faculty in Critical Studies. He received his MA in art history from Hunter College, where he studied with Rosalind Krauss and Robert Morris. He is a contributing editor of Art in America and a frequent contributor to Artnet News and Yale University Press online, and a long-standing member and former board member of AICA. His artist monographs include Stephen Antonakos, Larry Poons, Julio Larraz, Beatriz Milhazes, and Graham Sutherland: A Retrospective. Recent curatorial projects include Grasshopper: A Judy Pfaff Survey at CR10. He lives and works in New York City.

Michele Fenniak
Michele Fenniak paints enigmatic scenes of people in undefined, mysterious settings that speak to the ambiguity of personal experience and the tenuousness of social order, with narratives that are frequently indefinite and obliquely expressed. She received her BFA from Queen’s University in Ontario and her MFA from Yale University. She is adjunct faculty in drawing at the New York Academy of Art and has also taught at Pratt Institute and the Fashion Institute of Technology. Her work has been exhibited in museums throughout the United States, including the Frye Museum of Art in Seattle, the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock, and the Cornell Fine Arts Museum in Winter Park. She is a recent recipient of a Pollock-Krasner grant and is represented by Forum Gallery.

Judy Fox
Judy Fox is a sculptor who works in Rhinebeck, New York. She studied sculpture at Yale, receiving a BA in 1978, and at Skowhegan, then earned an MA in art history in 1983 and a degree in conservation in 1985 from the Institute of Fine Arts at NYU. She is a senior critic and professor at the New York Academy of Art. Her solo exhibitions include PPOW Gallery in New York, The Contemporary Museum in Honolulu, Ace Gallery in Beverly Hills, the Kohler Arts Center, Thaddaeus Ropac Gallery in Paris, and Kunsthalle im Pallazo in Switzerland. A fellow of Yaddo and MacDowell, she has received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, Anonymous Was a Woman, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Guggenheim Foundation.

Michiyo Fukushima
Michiyo Fukushima was born in New Delhi, India, and spent part of her childhood in Japan before moving to the United States to study painting. She won a national student competition as a high school student after a teacher entered her large oil painting, then studied photography in college and worked for magazines before deciding that the medium did not satisfy her desire to express herself. Studying abroad in the United States, she found herself by chance in a watercolor class and has worked in the medium ever since. She teaches painting as an instructor in the Continuing Studies program at the New York Academy of Art and is represented by Fischbach Gallery in New York City.

Chris Gallego
Chris Gallego is a realist painter and draftsman who lives and works in New York. He studied at the School of Visual Arts, the National Academy School of Fine Arts, and the Art Students League. He has taught since 1992 at the United Nations Fine Arts Society and the Woodstock School of Art, and currently at the Art Students League of New York and as adjunct faculty in drawing at the New York Academy of Art, and he leads drawing and painting workshops throughout the United States. His work has been shown at OK Harris, Hirschl & Adler, the New Britain Museum of American Art, and the Arkansas Arts Center. He has received fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation.

Thomas Germano
Thomas Germano is a painter who received his associate’s degree in art from Nassau Community College in 1983 and studied painting and art history at Cornell University, earning a BFA in 1985. After two years of building a portfolio and working in the field, he received a scholarship to Yale University, where he studied with William Bailey and Bernard Chaet and received his MFA in painting in 1989. He has taught at Long Island University, Nassau Community College, Suffolk Community College, and the New York Academy of Art, and currently teaches painting, drawing, and art history at the State University of New York at Farmingdale. His work is in public and private collections including Arthur Andersen International Headquarters, Brown and Forman, and the George Meany Center.

Ada Goldfeld
Ada Goldfeld is a painter based in Ridgewood, Queens. Her paintings function like vignettes, each capturing a quiet everyday moment that holds deeper significance, and she has recently turned to domestic spaces that teeter between different emotional states, using transparent layers of oil paint to explore the tension between feeling comfortable and feeling burdened or trapped. She graduated from the dual-degree program between the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and Tufts University with a BFA in studio art and a BA in art history and religion, and completed an MFA in painting at Rhode Island School of Design in 2018. Goldfeld is adjunct faculty in composition at the New York Academy of Art and has taught at Marymount Manhattan College, Wagner College, and Bergen Community College.

David Gothard
David Gothard is an illustrator and artist who earned a BFA in drawing from Pratt Institute in 1978. He has been a regular contributor to national and international publications, with clients including The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times, the Boston Globe, and Time magazine, and he has authored a series of children’s books for HarperCollins. His sculptured books have been exhibited at The Nathan Cummings Foundation and the Center for the Book Arts in New York, and his work is held in the permanent collection of the Skillman Library at Lafayette College. Gothard is adjunct faculty in drawing at the New York Academy of Art and also holds faculty positions at Penn State University and Pratt Institute.

Rie Hasegawa
Rie Hasegawa (b. Tokyo, Japan) is a printmaker working across intaglio, relief print, lithography, and monoprint. She received her BFA in architecture design from Musashino Art University in 1993 and worked as a painter for a stage company before moving to New York City in 2000. Hasegawa is a master printer and workshop technician at the EFA Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop, where she has collaborated with more than sixty artists including Zarina Hashmi, Derek Fordjour, and Alexandra Bell. She teaches printmaking at the New York Academy of Art and has taught at the Manhattan Graphic Center and MoMA’s education center. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is held by the Yale University Art Gallery, the New York Public Library, and the Harry Ransom Center.

Luján Pérez Hernández
Luján Pérez Hernández (b. 1991, Madrid, Spain) is an artist whose work combines printmaking, sculpture, and painting to explore the relationship between earth and spirit while tackling questions of love, death, rebirth, and belonging. She has lived between Spain and the United States since the age of six, and maintains her studio practice in a 1700s barn in Upstate New York, splitting her time between Upstate New York and Brooklyn. She teaches drawing at the New York Academy of Art.

John Horn
John Horn is a sculptor. He received his BFA from the Philadelphia College of Art, studying with Walter Erlebacher, and his MFA from CUNY Queens College under Richard McDermitt Miller. Horn then lived in Italy for twelve years, studying at Studio Simi in Florence while apprenticing at Henreaux marble studios near Carrara, and later assisting Romolo Felice, mold maker to Giacomo Manzu, in Rome. He teaches anatomy and sculpture at the New York Academy of Art and at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He has worked on historical conservation projects in Italy under the Soprintendenza di Belle Arti of Rome, including the Galleria d’Arte Moderna, the Arch of Constantine, the Capitoline Museum, and the Roman Forum, and has shown in Italy, New York, and Philadelphia.

Scott Hunt
Scott Hunt is a draftsman whose work consists of charcoal and pastel drawings on paper with narrative and allegorical themes. Trained as an illustrator, he holds a BFA from Parsons School of Design and teaches drawing at the New York Academy of Art. He has had seven solo exhibitions, with presentations at VOLTA Basel and SPRING BREAK New York, and co-curated You Tell Me, an exhibition of contemporary American narrative art at Foley Gallery. His illustration has appeared in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Harper’s, and The Atlantic Monthly. Hunt received the 2017 FID Prize for Drawing, a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant. His work is held by The Israel Museum, Jerusalem, and the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art.

Vera Iliatova
Vera Iliatova is a painter who teaches critical studies at the New York Academy of Art. She received her BA from Brandeis University and her MFA from Yale University. Iliatova was represented by Monya Rowe Gallery in New York, which presented her fifth solo exhibition in 2015, and her work has been included in exhibitions in the United States and abroad at venues including Galleria Glance in Turin, Mogadishni Gallery in Copenhagen, New Langton Art Center in San Francisco, Artists Space in New York, and David Castillo Gallery in Miami. She previously held full-time teaching appointments at Massachusetts College of Art, the University of California, Davis, and the University of New Hampshire.

Edgar Jerins
Edgar Jerins (b. 1958, Lincoln, Nebraska) is an artist whose drawings have been widely exhibited across the United States. He graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1980 with a four-year certificate and teaches drawing at the New York Academy of Art. Solo exhibitions include the Latvian Foreign Art Museum in Riga, the Museum of Nebraska Art, and Tatistcheff Gallery in New York, and his work is held by the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Arkansas Art Center, and the Global Center for Latvian Art in Cesis, Latvia. Jerins has received an Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant, a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, and the New York Academy of Art’s Venture Fund Grant in 2014.

Kyle Bellucci Johanson
Kyle Bellucci Johanson works in performance-architecture, situating objects, language, and media to visualize and critique power structures and instigate imaginary futures. He holds a BA in Art and Reconciliation Studies from Bethel University, studied peace and conflict at the University of Ulster, and completed an MFA at California Institute of the Arts. From 2018 to 2022 he founded and directed table, a project space dedicated to situating artists’ practices through exhibition, discursive meals, and publication. He is faculty of Critical Studies in the MFA program at the New York Academy of Art. Recent exhibitions include Council_St in Los Angeles, the Chicago Architecture Biennial, and Centro Cultural Metropolitano in Quito. He was a founding fellow of At Land’s Edge and a 2022-23 participant in the Whitney Independent Study Program.

Marshall Jones
Marshall Jones (b. Atlanta, Georgia) is a realist painter living and working in New York City. He teaches figure drawing and painting at the New York Academy of Art, the Art Students League of New York, the Salmagundi Club, and the National Arts Club. His work has been exhibited at Denise Bibro Gallery, Lodge Gallery, and Mark Miller Gallery. Jones has received the Elizabeth Greenshields Grant in 2008, the Phyllis Mason Grant, and the Jean Gates Grant, and as a scholarship member of the Salmagundi Club he has twice been awarded the Richard Pionk award. In 2010 he received the Fantasy Fountain Fund Travel Scholarship to study at the Paris American Academy. He was an ESKFF artist in residence at Mana Contemporary and co-founded the Art Grind Podcast.

Darina Karpov
Darina Karpov is a painter and a member of the first generation of contemporary artists to emerge from Russia after the Soviet Union’s dissolution. Born and raised in St. Petersburg, she trained at the preparatory school for the Repin Academy of Art before studying at the Maryland Institute College of Art and completing her MFA at the Yale School of Art. She teaches painting at the New York Academy of Art. Represented by Pierogi Gallery in New York, where she has had six solo shows, Karpov has also exhibited at the Neuberger Museum and the Irish Museum of Modern Art. Her work is held by the Princeton University Art Museum and the Zabludowicz Trust in London. She received a NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship in 2020 and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant in 2009.

Kurt Kauper
Kurt Kauper (b. 1966, Indianapolis, Indiana) is a painter whose figure paintings of historical and imagined people combine formal precision with thematic indeterminacy, ambiguity, and strangeness. Raised outside Boston, he received his BFA from Boston University in 1988 and his MFA from UCLA in 1995, and he teaches painting at the New York Academy of Art. Solo exhibitions include ACME Gallery in Los Angeles and Deitch Projects in New York, and his work has appeared in group shows including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Pompidou Center in Paris, and the Stedelijk Museum in Ghent. Kauper has received grants from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation, the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, and his work is held by the Museum of Modern Art and the Yale University Art Gallery.

Jessica Leo
Jessica Leo (b. New Jersey) is an artist who lives and works in New York City. She received her BS in Art Education from Towson University and her MFA in Drawing from the New York Academy of Art, where she currently teaches drawing. Leo has also taught at Altos de Chavon School of Design in La Romana and at the Robert Blackburn Print Shop at the Elizabeth Foundation. Her work has been exhibited in galleries throughout the United States.

Greg Lindquist
Greg Lindquist (b. Wilmington, North Carolina) is a painter whose paintings and participatory installations apply landscape and abstraction to raise awareness of environmental concerns. He earned a BA from North Carolina State University and an MFA in Painting and MA in Art History at Pratt Institute. Lindquist teaches art history and critical studies at the New York Academy of Art, and at Pratt Institute and the Rhode Island School of Design. He co-founded the Art Books in Review section of The Brooklyn Rail, where he was co-editor until 2017, and participated in the Whitney Museum’s Independent Study Program in 2017-18. His work has been exhibited at the North Carolina Museum of Art and the Weatherspoon Art Museum, and he has received a Milton and Sally Avery Foundation Grant and a Pollock-Krasner Grant.

Dik Liu
Dik Liu is an artist and professor based in New York City. He received his MFA from the Yale University School of Art and teaches painting at the New York Academy of Art and at Fairleigh Dickinson University, having also taught at the School of Visual Arts, Pratt Institute, the Cooper Union, and the New School for Social Research. He has had one-person exhibitions at Allen Sheppard Gallery and Art Moving in New York, and has exhibited at the National Academy of Design, White Columns, and Yale University. His curatorial projects include exhibitions at Tweed Gallery and the Mayor’s Office of the City of New York. Liu’s work has been reviewed in The New York Times and American Artist Magazine, and he is included in the book 100 New York Painters.

Margaret McCann
Margaret McCann is a painter whose work features monumental figures inspired by Roman monuments, cubo-surrealist still lifes, self-portraits with quasi-architectural headdresses, and Atlantic City imagery. She received her BFA from Washington University in St. Louis and her MFA from Yale University, and also studied at the New York Studio School. McCann teaches critical studies and painting at the New York Academy of Art, the Art Students League, and Montclair State University, and has previously taught at Pratt Institute, Boston University, and in Rome at RISD and John Cabot University. Her solo exhibitions include Antonia Jannone Disegni di Architettura in Milan and The Painting Center in New York. She has received Fulbright, Ingram-Merrill, and Blanche E. Colman grants, and edited The Figure (Skira/Rizzoli, 2014).

Randolph L. McIver
Randolph L. McIver is an artist who teaches anatomy at the New York Academy of Art. He earned a BA in Art Education from the University of Texas at El Paso and a BFA in Painting from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena before completing his MFA at the New York Academy of Art. He has also taught at the Barrett Art Center in Poughkeepsie, New York, and at Guild Hall in East Hampton, New York. His work has been included in numerous group exhibitions throughout the United States, and he received a fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

Frederick Mershimer
Frederick Mershimer (b. 1958, Sharon, Pennsylvania) is a printmaker whose practice centers on mezzotint. He received a BFA in Painting from Carnegie Mellon University in 1980 and, after moving to New York in 1982, studied graphics and fine art printmaking at Parsons School of Design, the Pratt Graphic Center, and the Manhattan Graphic Center. He teaches printmaking at the New York Academy of Art. His prints are held in collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Library of Congress, the National Museum of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution, the Cleveland Museum of Art, Harvard’s Fogg Museum, and the New York Public Library. In 2007 he was named a Fellow in Printmaking, Drawing and Artist’s Books by the New York State Foundation for the Arts.

Steve Mumford
Steve Mumford (b. 1960) is a painter and documentary draftsman known for drawings made in Iraq and Afghanistan between 2003 and 2011, where he worked both as an embedded artist and independently, and which he often translates into oil paintings. He received a BFA from the Boston Museum School at Tufts University in 1986 and an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in 1994. He teaches painting at the New York Academy of Art and at SVA. He has exhibited in New York since 1996, including seven solo shows at Postmasters Gallery, and his work has been shown at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, the Meadows Museum, and Marella Arte Contemporanea in Milan. His drawings have appeared in Harper’s Magazine, BOMB, and the book Baghdad Journal.

Roberto Osti
Roberto Osti is an artist and scientific illustrator who teaches anatomy and drawing. Born in Italy, he graduated from the State Institute of Art and from the School of Anatomical and Surgical Illustration at the University of Bologna, then worked for about ten years as a freelance illustrator for scientific publications in Italy. He moved to the United States in 1992, studied at the Art Students League in New York, and earned an MFA from the New York Academy of Art. He teaches at the New York Academy of Art, the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, and the Caspersen School of Graduate Studies at Drew University. His illustrations have appeared in Scientific American, Natural History, and Scholastic, and he has exhibited in New York, Philadelphia, Newark, Cincinnati, and Europe.

Mu Pan
Mu Pan is an artist originally from Taiwan who teaches drawing at the New York Academy of Art. He received a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in 2001 and an MFA with honors from the school’s Illustration as Visual Essay department in 2007. His work has been shown throughout the United States and internationally, including at Copro Gallery in Santa Monica, La Luz de Jesus Gallery and Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles, and the Musee de la Halle Saint Pierre in Paris. He has held solo exhibitions at 3rd Ward in Brooklyn and at KunstRaum H&H in Cologne, Germany, and presented his own booth at Art Taipei in 2011.

Guno Park
Guno Park is an artist based in Brooklyn whose drawings take up the natural world and the urban world, including animals, urban encounters, and surrounding environments. Born in Seoul and raised in Toronto, he received a diploma in Classical Animation from Sheridan College in 2001, a BFA from the Ontario College of Art and Design in 2008, and an MFA from the New York Academy of Art in 2011. He began teaching figure drawing around 2003 at Sheridan College and Seneca College, and since moving to New York in 2009 has taught at the School of Visual Arts, the New York Film Academy, Marymount College, and the New York Academy of Art. His work is in the permanent collection of the Brooklyn Museum.

Heather Personett
Heather Personett is a figurative sculptor based in New York City. She received a BFA in Animation and Illustration from SUNY Fredonia and an MFA in Sculpture from the New York Academy of Art in 2014. After graduating she held the ABCStone Carrara stone carving residency in Italy, where she was introduced to stone carving and assisted the artist Barbara Segal, then worked as a portrait sculptor at Studio EIS in Brooklyn before going freelance, providing moldmaking and figurative sculpture for New York artists and projects. She heads the sculpture program at Grand Central Atelier and teaches figurative sculpture at SUNY FIT and structural anatomy at the New York Academy of Art.

Colette Robbins
Colette Robbins is an artist based in New York City who teaches sculpture at the New York Academy of Art. She received a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and an MFA from Parsons the New School for Design. She has held residencies at Austevollportalen on Marstein Island in Norway, the Cill Rialaig Project in Ireland, and the Vermont Studio Center. Her work has been exhibited at 101/Exhibit in Los Angeles, at P.P.O.W. Gallery, Deitch Projects, and The Hole in New York City, at Koki Fine Arts in Tokyo, and at Workshop Gallery in Venice, and has been reviewed in The New Yorker, Artillery Magazine, LA Weekly, and Beautiful Decay.

Mario Robinson
Mario Andres Robinson is a realist painter whose quiet, contemplative subjects follow the American realist tradition of Andrew Wyeth, Thomas Eakins, Winslow Homer, and Edward Hopper. Born in Altus, Oklahoma, he moved to New Jersey at the age of twelve and studied at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. He teaches drawing at the New York Academy of Art and is the author of Lessons in Realistic Watercolor, published by Monacelli Press. He is an exhibiting artist member of the National Arts Club, an artist member of the Salmagundi Club, and a signature member of the Pastel Society of America, and he is represented by Bernarducci Gallery in New York. In 2006 The Artist’s Magazine named him one of the top 20 realist artists under the age of 40.

Jean-Pierre Roy
Jean-Pierre Roy (b. 1974, Santa Monica, California) is a painter who teaches painting at the New York Academy of Art. He earned a BFA in Film from Loyola Marymount University and worked as an art director at DreamWorks Interactive and as a lead matte painter on effects heavy films before moving to New York City for an MFA in painting at the New York Academy of Art, completed in 2002. He received a one year Academy fellowship in 2003 and studied anatomy at Teddy Hall College, Oxford. He has exhibited nationally and internationally, including a solo museum show at the Torrance Museum of Art in Los Angeles in 2009, and his work has been reviewed in Art in America, The New York Times, and New American Paintings.

Manu Saluja
Manu Saluja (b. 1971, Brooklyn) is a painter of portraits and figurative subjects. She received her BFA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts, where she was mentored by John Frederick Murray, and her MFA from the New York Academy of Art. Saluja has taught drawing and painting for over fifteen years, with courses at the New York Academy of Art, Montclair State University, the Fashion Institute of Technology, and the Long Island Academy of Fine Art. Her work has been shown at the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Royal Ontario Museum, the Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Butler Institute of American Art, and is held in collections across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and India. She won the 2019 BP Portrait Travel Award.

Sarah Schmerler
Sarah Schmerler is an art critic and writing specialist based in New York City who teaches Critical Studies as adjunct faculty at the New York Academy of Art. She has contributed reviews, news features, and profiles to TimeOut NY, Art in America, The New York Times, ARTnews, The WG News + Arts, The Village Voice, Photograph magazine and other publications. Her curatorial projects have taken place in gallery and non-traditional spaces including Norte Maar, Pocket Utopia, Governors Island, Gallery Available, and the online gallery 45Projects.com. Schmerler is also a visual artist, creating notebooks that concern the aural and visual frottage of her surroundings as she migrates throughout New York City.

Bernardo Siciliano
Bernardo Siciliano (b. 1969, Rome) is a painter represented by Forum Gallery in New York. In 1992 Piero Maccarinelli commissioned him to paint the sets for Carlo Repetti’s comedy Verso la fine dell’estate at the 35th Festival of Spoleto, and in 1995 he collaborated on Bernardo Bertolucci’s film Io ballo da sola. His work has been shown by Il Gabbiano and Forum Gallery at fairs including CIAE Chicago, FIAC Paris, Arte Fiera Bologna, the LA Art Show, and Art Miami, and in group exhibitions at the Albright Knox Museum, Galleria Forni, and DFN Gallery. Recent solo exhibitions include the Museo d’Arte Contemporanea and the Chiostro del Bramante in Rome and the Palazzo della Ragione in Milan. He won an award at the 1998 Prix International d’Art Contemporain de Montecarlo.

Chie Shimizu
Chie Shimizu (b. 1971, Japan) is a sculptor who also works in metal and oil painting. She earned her BFA in metal crafts from Tokyo University of the Arts in 1993 and her MFA in sculpture from the New York Academy of Art in 2001, where she now teaches sculpture as adjunct faculty. She has shown metal works and oil paintings in Tokyo and Kanagawa, and her work has been exhibited at New York venues including Island Weiss Gallery, Mark Miller Gallery, Dillon Gallery, Booth Gallery, and Fresh Window Gallery. Shimizu’s work is held in private collections worldwide, from the United States to Germany, Turkey, Israel, Peru, and Japan. She lives and works in Queens, New York.

Robert Simon
Robert Simon is an artist who teaches Critical Studies and sculpture at the New York Academy of Art. He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a BA in Art History and continued his studio training at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where he earned the four-year certificate. He has executed both public and private commissions and has participated in numerous group exhibitions, and his solo debut was held at Gross-McCleaf Gallery in Philadelphia in December 2003. During his studies at the Pennsylvania Academy he received several prizes, including first place in the Stimson Competition, second place in the Stewardson Competition, the Dutrow Award, the Mary Butler Award, the PAFA Fellowship Purchase Prize, and the Cresson Traveling Scholarship for study in Europe.

Melanie Vote
Melanie Vote (b. 1973) is a painter and multimedia artist from Iowa, based in New York. She received a BFA from Iowa State University and an MFA from the New York Academy of Art in 1998, and she teaches painting at the Academy, having also taught at Pratt Institute and The New School. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in solo and group exhibitions at Flowers Gallery, The Lodge Gallery, Sloan Fine Art, and DFN Gallery in New York, as well as the Indiana Contemporary Art Center, Jenkins-Johnson Gallery, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, The Hangaram Art Museum, and ADAH Abu Dhabi. Vote received a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 2006 and residencies at Jentel and the Vermont Studio Center.

Jiannan Wu
Jiannan Wu (b. 1990, Dalian, China) is a sculptor who uses relief and diorama to present contemporary urban life in realist, narrative terms. He received his BFA in sculpture from the China Academy of Art and his MFA in sculpture from the New York Academy of Art, where he now teaches sculpture. He is an elected member of the American National Sculpture Society and a member of the American Medallic Sculpture Association. His work has been shown at Accesso Gallery in Italy, Gallery Poulsen and Art Herning in Denmark, Sotheby’s, Art Miami, the Southampton Arts Center, and the Chongqing Contemporary Art Museum. Wu has received an Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation grant, the 2017 Dexter Jones Award, the Compleat Sculptor Award, and residencies from the Terra Foundation and ABC Stone Carrara.

Zane York
Zane York, born in Nebraska and raised in the Midwest, received his BFA in drawing, painting, and sculpture from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh and his MFA in painting from the New York Academy of Art, where he teaches painting and drawing as adjunct faculty. He is represented by Gallery Henoch in New York and Galerie Fledermaus in California, and has had solo exhibitions at the Dubuque Museum of Art and the Arsenal Gallery in Central Park. His paintings have been exhibited in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Denver, Melbourne, St. Barthelemy, Florida, and France, and are held in collections worldwide. His work has been written about in the L.A. Times, Fine Art Connoisseur, Hyperallergic, and Metro. He moved to Brooklyn in 2001 and maintains his studio in Greenpoint.

Evan Kitson
Evan Kitson is an artist who teaches anatomy, drawing, and painting as adjunct faculty at the New York Academy of Art. He earned his BFA in Illustration from Pennsylvania College of Art & Design and his MFA in Drawing from the New York Academy of Art. He also teaches at Harrisburg Area Community College, The Teaching Studios of Art, and Pennsylvania College of Art & Design. Kitson has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Pennsylvania and New York, and his work appears in the book The Nerdrum School: The Master and His Students as well as in Poets Artists Magazine, Manifest Gallery’s International Drawing Annual, The Newer York, and The Figurative Artist’s Handbook. He lives and works in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and New York City.
