Peter Drake

Provost

Peter Drake is a painter and curator, and Provost of the New York Academy of Art. He has shaped the school’s academic life since 2010 without leaving the studio: twenty-seven solo exhibitions, and a public commission seen by six thousand commuters a day.

BIO

Drake graduated with a BFA from Pratt Institute. He joined the Academy as Dean of Academic Affairs in 2010 and was appointed Provost in January 2018, and he continues to work directly with students as a thesis advisor. He has also taught at Parsons School of Design, the School of Visual Arts and the Maryland Institute College of Art.

His paintings have appeared in twenty-seven solo exhibitions and are held by the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, MOCA Los Angeles, the Phoenix Art Museum and the Weatherspoon Art Museum, among others. Waiting For Toydot, his permanent commission for MTA Arts & Design, comprises eighteen art-glass windows and five ceramic and glass mosaics at the LIRR Massapequa station, seen by more than six thousand commuters a day since 2015.

Drake has received a National Endowment for the Arts award and a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship. He curates widely, including We Are Family with Clifford Owens and Figurative Diaspora with Mark Tansey, and previously curated for The Drawing Center. He is represented by Linda Warren Projects and Craighead Green Gallery.
