John Jacobsmeyer is a printmaker and painter, and Director of Printmaking at the New York Academy of Art. He has worked in conceptual figuration in New York for over two decades and runs JJHS Press, publishing his own books and portfolios.
Jacobsmeyer earned his BFA from the University of New Hampshire and an MFA in painting and printmaking from Yale University. He has been an active contributor to conceptual figuration in New York for over twenty years, and operates JJHS Press, which published his wordless book More Than Human in 2010 and the portfolio Safety First for the Shanghai Metro in 2013.
He has taught or lectured at more than forty colleges and universities worldwide, among them the Rhode Island School of Design, the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, Shanghai University, Vanderbilt University and Pratt Institute. Residencies include the Ragdale Foundation, the MacDowell Colony, the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program, Anchor Graphics, Cill Rialaig in Ireland, Shanghai University and Mimar Sinan University in Istanbul.
His awards include a Fulbright Fellowship to Italy, a Pollock-Krasner grant, a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship, the Basil Alkazzi Award and two fellowships from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts. His work is held by the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art, the Springfield Museum of Art and the cities of Seattle and Shanghai. He shows with Gallery Poulsen, Art Labor Gallery and Jonathan LeVine Projects.
