The Academy’s clubs and organizations cover a range of activities. Students are encouraged to create and participate in organizations and activities that meet their specific needs and interests. Past clubs and organizations are listed below. Please contact the Office of Student Services at student.services@student.nyaa.edu for details and questions about starting a student organization.
Poetry Club
Writing is an essential part of a holistic artistic practice and poetry can take any form, from haiku, to stream-of-consciousness, to a piece of prose. As a group we will come together to each develop our own individualized writing voice. Members will create and share a weekly poem inspired by a prompt democratically decided upon the week before. Discussions and critique will follow in workshop style. We will also bring to the table readings from our favorite poets and writers to share as inspiration. With the goal of assembling a student zine at the end of the year, this club will be meeting weekly on Mondays from 1-2 PM. Join us!
Print Research Alliance
Join the PRA to participate in a variety of printmaking projects throughout the semester including trade portfolios, collaborative prints, jumbo printmaking, print marathons and more. All levels of printmaking experience welcome!
PRA meeting dates 2024:
Every other Tuesday at 5:30pm
Aug 27, Sept 10, Sept 24, Oct 8, Oct 22, Nov 5, Nov 19, Dec 3
MagicStroke Illustration Club
Illustration derives from fine art, but was allocated as a different genre for its commercial purpose. Yet its visual art values are highly underestimated. In the Illustration club, NYAA club members will together create illustrations, making zines, learn how to print digital images properly with proper dpi and margins. The club will produce merchandises and apply to art fair around NYC to get extra artistic exposure. Members will flourish their artistic ability into business production. You do not need to have a background in illustration. No need for experience in digital illustration or typesetting.
We will meet twice a month, Tuesday 5:30pm (When PRA is not having a meeting), one in-person, the other one on Zoom.
Queer Critical Writing Club (QCWC)
Pronounced “quack”. We meet every Wednesday (5:30PM), gathering with a shared vision. To create an idea hub and safe space where queer realities can be spoken into existence. Here, we strive towards expression, empathy, release, and support. It’s a place for initiative, learning, and collaboration, where ideas are free to bloom. We invite members to explore together—gallery hopping with purpose, seeking out queer artists and their work. We’ll reflect on the shows we see, the tendencies of galleries in shaping queer voices, and how art reflects, resists, or reshapes the world we live in. Our ultimate goal is more than just conversation. We want to write together, dream together, build something. We aim to create a manifesto as a collective, to exhibit in group shows, to write proposals, and to share open calls. And through all of it, we’ll share our journeys of making it in the world outside the Academy.
Film Club
NYAA Movie Club will break up the monotony of the week with visual and narrative inspiration to fuel all your creative endeavors. We will look at classics, independent films, and short anthologies from different periods and backgrounds. Discussions are welcome but by no means necessary. Snacks will be provided!
We will meet every other week on Thursdays starting at 1 PM
Technology Club
Welcome to Technology Club!
Computers! Hardware and Software! 3d modeling and printing! Projectors! Lights and Cameras! Come share your knowledge of tools and technologies and discuss how we integrate them into our art making practices. We will have a mix of student led demonstrations and presentations by faculty. We’ll share our experiences and expertise, and direct each other to the best tutorials and online resources.
Thursdays at 12:30.
