I use the history of maroonage– the practice of enslaved Africans escaping the plantation to live hidden in nature and form self-sustaining communities– as a stage upon which to unfold dramas through narrative paintings, drawings, collage, and installation. These often-anachronistic works examine ideas of escape, conflict, spirituality and religion, and man’s relationship to land and the rest of the natural world.
