Set in the hilly land of cows and lakes in which I was raised, my work dwells
on the strange yet familiar intersections between the manmade and the organic,
where the human desire to contain, control, and optimize seems at odds with an
inherent appreciation and yearning for the natural. By now, nature is so intertwined
with humanity that we often fail to recognize our own influence; the line between
the artificial and the organic is long since blurred.
My iconography is thus derived from the imagery of my upbringing that best
embodies this tension between that which is manipulated or built, and that which
grows or develops naturally. And with this work, I aim to champion humility. My
figures are unheroic—pathetic, even. They do not flaunt themselves to the world,
but, rather, contemplate their place in it. Here is where hope lies, in my opinion;
here, in the humble assertion that we are not in fact champions of the world, but
characters within it.
