  • Appropriate attire must be worn to work in the woodshop. No jewelry or baggy clothes may be worn when working with portable or fixed machinery. Long hair must be tied back. No open toed shoes. Never wear gloves while operating machinery.
  •  You must provide your own particulate respirator. The dust collector must be turned on when the shop is in use.
  • Sanding and other operations that create particulates must be performed using the Garden Level Hepa Equipment. The Garden Level HEPA equipment is BLUE – Vacuum, Downdraft table, and the large, wall-sized HEPA cartridge filtration unit.
  • Everyone must wear safety glasses upon entering the wood shop. Safety glasses can be found inside the woodshop or provided upon request. Please note that a face shield is not a substitute for safety glasses; it is only added protection.
  • Wear ear protection as needed. Ear protection can be found inside the woodshop or provided upon request.
  • No student can work unsupervised in the woodshop.
  • No adjustments are to be made to any equipment except by the Woodshop Manager or the Woodshop Monitor. No exceptions.
  • The use of the woodshop is limited to woodshop related projects only. No other material – like metal, plaster, or clay, is to be used in the woodshop without the permission of the Shop Monitor.
  • Do not cut irregularly shaped, warped, or split wood (this includes cutting rough lumber on the table saw) The wood must be milled first and sit flat against the saw’s table and fence when using the table saw.
  • No reclaimed or found materials allowed.
  • If uncertain about using a material in the wood shop always ask first.
  • Do not cut material containing nails, inclusions, or other foreign materials. Use caution when cutting through knots. Knots can often fragment unpredictably, turning into dangerous projectiles.
  • Carbon fiber and fiberglass are not allowed in the shop. Tooling/sanding of these materials will release harmful fibers into the air and are therefore prohibited.
  • No treated lumber.
  • No lead or lead based paints.
  • Secure work piece with table vise, clamps, etc.
  • Do not start equipment with components touching the work piece.
  • Do not cut small pieces without the use of a jig or hold-down. Always keep hands at least 6″ away from circular blades.
  • Never leave tool running unattended
  • If you find any tool/equipment in need of repair, turn it off immediately and alert the Woodshop Monitor. Under no circumstances should you make repairs to the equipment yourself. Please note that broken tools may take up to 2 weeks to repair.
  • Woodshop users are responsible for immediately cleaning their work area and tools used, when done working. This must be done before another person uses the area. Brooms, hand brooms, dustpan, Shop-Vac, and HEPA vacuum are provided. Failure to clean your work area may result in suspension from the woodshop.
  • Students must label all relevant materials. Projects in process may only be left with permission from the Woodshop Manager. Unlabeled items will be discarded.
  • All signed-out tools must be returned the same day. NO I.D = NO TOOL SIGN OUT. No exceptions
  • No open flame in the woodshop.
  •  Immediately report all accidents or incidents to the Woodshop Monitor.
  •  Only currently enrolled students, who have attended a Woodshop Orientation, and who have received the proper training, can use the woodshop.
