I went to see the band Metallica perform in Berlin. It was raining and it was cold, but I was close to the stage and I could smell the sulfur and feel the warmth from the pyrotechnics above me. I was surrounded by an energetic crowd at the Olympiastadion and I could not help but think of the history of the venue. The experience was completely visceral and impacted me greatly. I decided that, for the next year, I wanted to be the equivalent of a metal band painter. I wanted to make something big, anthemic, dramatic to the point of theatrical, and with a broad appeal to a variety of audiences. The next day, I saw the Menzel painting Frederick the Great Addresses his Generals before the Battle of Leuthen in 1757. The painting is large and dynamic. I was particularly struck by the way Menzel painted the dirty snow-studded landscape and the boots worn by the Generals. I was revitalized and decided to dive into the narrative landscape of Metallica.
