Painting in Florence, Italy with Alyssa Monks

Taught by one of the Academy’s most sought after instructors, this ten day workshop in Florence will teach students to develop their artistic vision, to master color relationships, and to explore application technique. The workshop includes 3 days working from photo reference, 3 days plein-air painting and 4 days working from a live figure model. Students will learn how to best use the photograph for composition and to create volume and space while infusing the painting with one’s own application technique and aesthetic to create a complex surface. The plein air portion of the workshop will explore on how to compose the landscape and draw from so much information and to create a summary and focused moment. The four day model portion of the workshop will be a way to combine all strategies discussed and add some color enhancements to further develop one’s vision. Students will develop 3 paintings, one from each source, using a number of oil sketches and drawing studies as well as the final canvases.

Held at the historic Villa il Palmerino in Florence, Italy, this workshop offers an artistic escape into a natural world permeated with history. Spend ten days capturing the beauty of the Italian countryside working from various sources, both outdoors and in, while soaking up the sights and splendors of the surrounding region. Revered artist Alyssa Monks will guide students through demonstration, instruction, and discussion on how to transcend a photo reference, compose a landscape which creates a focused moment, and to work from a model to achieve a successful likeness.
